16th October 2017
Dear Member Societies, As you may know Monday 16th October 2017 is World Anaesthesia Day. This year we will be celebrating my promoting our #CountMeIn! campaign. Count Me In! is an initiative to unite anaesthesia providers on World Anaesthesia Day and focus on raising awareness and support for scaling-up “human resources for anaesthesia”.
The WFSA’s recently launched Global Anaesthesia Workforce Map, created by surveying anaesthesia providers around the world, highlights the anaesthesia workforce shortage crisis. 70 countries had a total anaesthesia provider density of less than 5 per 100,000 population. Without adequate numbers of staff it will be impossible to scale-up anaesthesia provision worldwide, and impossible to ensure access to safe anaesthesia for all patients.
I have attached a Count Me In! toolkit explaining how individual anaesthesiologists can get involved which I hope you will forward to you members. You can also find more information about the day at www.wfsahq.org/world-anaesthesia-day
Finally, we are also using this opportunity to gain more data about facility level anaesthesia capacity, and we would appreciate it if you could complete this survey (https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6VBJJMK) on your hospital/medical centre.
Many thanks and best wishes,
